Texas State Equestrian competes in IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) shows. One of the benefits of IHSA is that all of the horses and tack are provided by the hosting school. So, to be on the Texas State Equestrian Team, it is NOT required that you have your own horse. At an IHSA show, the horses are already warmed up for the riders. Right before the rider's class they will draw a horse that has been appropriately matched with the level of skill of the class. The rider will then compete in their class with the horse that they have drawn and never ridden before. The rider is being judged solely on how they ride, and not the horse.
The equestrian club routinely volunteers with the A.W.A.R.E therapeutic riding center and conducts multiple fundraisers to help defray costs of the sport.
